Samedi 12 avril à 17h : Film Daivanamathil par Jayaraj

Il y a un peu plus d'une semaine, le film de Jayaraj, Daivanamathil a été projeté à Paris par l'association France-Union Indienne. Ce film abordait le rapport entre les musulmans et le recours ou non à la violence en Inde, un sujet excellemment abordé et traité dans ce film !

Des centaines de personnes de nos communautés indiennes ont été informées au sujet de cette magnifique initiative et ont été invitées pour voir ce magnifique film. En particulier, les communautés gujarati de Paris ont été assez bien informées et même relancées. Nous étions environ une bonne cinquantaine lors de cette projection mais, à quelques très rares exceptions près, il n'y avait aucun indien...

Bien entendu, il fallait s'y attendre. En effet, il n'y avait aucun ismaélien, aucun bohra, aucun hindou et, bien sûr, aucun khoja bhai de chez nous ! Sur près de 5 à 8.000 personnes qui sont de ces communautés et qui sont sur Paris et la région parisienne, personne ne s'est déplacé pour voir ce film magnifique, très juste et très lucide. Il n'y avait même aucune personne affilié au club de gens dits "civilisés" du genre NAGIN et autres. Il n'y avait que des "topiaras" (des «blancs») et en grand nombre en plus !

Ce n'est, bien sûr, pas la première fois que je ne vois jamais personne de nos communautés indiennes à ce genre de manifestations culturelles...Le message de ce film, comme d'autres projetés en d'autres occasions, était d'une humanité, d'une puissance et d'une intensité remarquables. Mais, les indiens de chez nous préfèrent le manichéisme, les caricatures grossières et infantilisantes, les jugements à l'emporte-pièce si faussement teintés de dévotion et de piété.

Ce film remettait en cause bien des idées reçues, bien des préjugés qui circulent dans nos communautés indiennes, notamment chez celles qui sont du Gujarat et qui se sont dispersées dans l'Océan Indien pour se retrouver, pour une partie, en France, en Angleterre, aux Etats-Unis, au Canada et en bien d'autres contrées dites «modernes». Mais, ces indiens-là ont préféré ne pas venir de peur de voir leurs préjugés remis en cause. Comme je le disais dans un précédent message, "toutes les vérités ne sont pas bonnes à entendre"...

Tout cela est vraiment affreux et attristant...Vers quel monde allons-nous ?

Résumé :

Sahib, un musulman laïc convaincu, prend ses distances avec son petit-fils Anwar désormais attiré par les voies de l’extrémisme. Daivanamathil se penche sur la question du terrorisme d’un point de vue personnel et émotionnel à travers le cheminement d’Anwar, un jeune homme éduqué et progressiste se tournant vers le jihad, à la suite de la démolition de la Babri Masjid en 1992. Mais plus que l'histoire d'Anwar, le film raconte surtout celle de sa jeune épouse Samira, ouverte d’esprit, qui se consacre à un travail de réexamen de la lutte pour l’indépendance de l’Inde et du rôle joué par des responsables musulmans pour construire une nation laïque, dans l'espoir de libérer Anwar de ses nouvelles convictions. Rarement un sujet aussi délicat a-t-il été traité avec autant de maturité.

Nadine Tabouriech, co-directrice de Chalachitra-Europe, spécialiste du cinéma indien, présentera le film.

Synopsis du film :

« Daivanamathil » traite de l’extrémisme religieux comme d’un poison qui s’immisce dans la vie d’une société et d’une région (le Kérala) où la coexistence et la tolérance entre différentes religions semblaient jusque là bien établies. Le film dresse le portrait de Samira, une jeune femme dont les rêves sont brisés par le changement brutal d’état d’esprit d’une minorité au sein de sa communauté. Le film illustre les questions profondément troublantes qui hantent l’horizon sociopolitique de l’Inde contemporaine, le rôle joué par l’extrémisme dans une société séculariste et démocratique, et comment une petite minorité religieuse parvient à transformer l’image d’une religion comme l’Islam fondée sur le principe de « paix » en une idéologie de terreur et d’intolérance.

Note sur le réalisateur :

Jayaraj est diplômé en électronique et télécommunication. Il est l’auteur d’une vingtaine de long-métrages en malayalam. Réalisateur très reconnu au Kérala, il a déjà obtenu plusieurs récompenses à l’échelle nationale pour ses films précédents dont « Desadanam » (1996) et « Kaliyattom » (1997), une version kéralaise de l’Othello de Shakespeare revue à travers le théâtre traditionnel « kalliyattam » et « theyyam ».

All in the name of faith

« Daivanamathil » brings to light what it means to be a fundamentalist. Anuj Kumar reports.

To an extent economic condition is also responsible in making the Terrorists- Shoukath.

At a time when a certain section of society is out to propagate that a true Muslim and a true Indian can't reside in one soul, comes Daivanamathil (In The Name of God).

Directed by Jayaraj, the celebrated Malyalam filmmaker who already has four National Award winning films to his credit Daivanamathil is the story of Anwar, an educated Malayali youth. The story and script is by producer Aryadan Shoukath

Here Anwar is blissfully married to Samira, a freethinking individual but all havoc is let loose when Anwar goes to Aligarh Muslim University for post graduation which happens to be the period after the Babri Masjid demolition. There he comes into contact with the fundamentalist forces and transforms into a militant.

Shoukath says the story owes its origin to a personal experience. "There was a friend who was a staunch supporter of the communist ideology. But when he returned after completing his education from Aligarh, he was a changed man."

Isn't this a sweeping remark on an educational institution and reeks of North-South divide?

Denies Shoukath, "The film doesn't generalise the role of the educational institution. I believe to an extent economic condition is also responsible in the making of terrorists. In Kerala, Muslims are, in general, well off." But there is increasing presence of shakhas and counter Muslim League propaganda in the State. "It is, and people coming from the Gulf return with all kinds of stories but the impact is not as much as in the North."

Finding a solution

The film speaks of finding a solution for terrorism within the framework of the constitution without giving up on the fundamentals of faith. It also counters the fundamentalist lobby with dialogues like "Mahatma Gandhi and Maulana Azad read the Quran so they stood for a secular State while Jinnah who didn't read the holy book asked for a separate State on the basis of religion."

"Babri demolition and Gujarat carnage have cast serious doubts on the security of minorities. The Muslim youth is feeling restless but none is there to guide. The film says the solution doesn't lie in picking up the gun. One should fight the battles within the framework of Constitution, following the path shown by the National Movement."

Jayaraj and Shoukath have aesthetically woven the culture of Malabar Muslims into the storyline. Says Jayaraj, "Being not one from the community, it was difficult for me to understand their ceremonies, songs and lifestyle." Jayaraj, who is equally famous for his commercial potboilers, says with so much technology coming into cinema we are losing out on the simple aesthetics of cinema. "Daivanamathil allows me to do this. But mind you generally it's the money earned from commercial cinema that is used to produce such ventures."

Daivanamathil is an award winning Malayalam movie directed by Jayaraj. Aryadan Shaukath is the producer. Playing the lead are upcoming stars Prithwiraj and Bhavana.The film is based on a Muslim story and throws light on the Babri Masjid demolition in December 1992 which had its repercussions on Kerala Muslims.Bhavana got State Award for best character actress for this film.

'Daivanamathil' is commendable as a film. The story itself has enough potential to go great guns. The story is about Anwar (Pritviraj) who discontinues his education further at the Aligarh Muslim University soon after his marriage. During his stay the Babri Masjid demolition occurs and as a result he turns a fundamentalist. His wife an educated Muslim girl (Bhavana) tries to alter and change the ideals of her Islamic fanatic husband. But to reform himself he rather chooses the way to jail and starts afresh. The thread of the story is the aftermath of the Babri Masjid demolition and the Gujarat riots.

Anwar encounters a group of Karsevaks in a train, all of them headed towards the demolition of Babri Masjid. The encounter greatly disturbs him and he is no longer the same loving and romantic husband to his wife as well as the engrossed PG student.

He writes a letter to Samira about his intentions and his decision to join Jehad to seek revenge on others. Anwar goes on to become a full time extremist and plants a bomb in a hotel at the Ramzan time. This hurts his grandfather a lot who is always against extremism.

Anwar on the other hand is unstoppable and believes that the deaths of innocents are a part of the Jehad. Sahib tells his grandson to stop all his activities at once and warns him about the ugly consequences, the community has to face, because of his deeds, but to no avail.

Meanwhile, Anwar lands up in jail. Samira only has one wish, her husband should come back to his normal life. He should become her old Anwar, romantic and soft person.

Prithviraj has again shown that he is the phenomenon waiting to happen. Bhavana too proves that she is no less in acting. Liberty Mammootty comes up with a superlative performance as the grand father. The music, editing and camera work, all deserves worthy mention.

The film overall is a guaranteed money back to the viewers with no hidden intentions or caste feelings. The director deserves kudos for his fine work.
