De nationalité pakistanaise, Ustad Sharafat Ali Khan est issu d’une illustre famille de musiciens du Punjab indien. Il représente la 12ème génération de cet héritage musical, tandis que son fils de 15 ans, Shujat Ali, s’affirme déjà comme emblématique de la 13ème. L’un et l’autre sont virtuoses et dignes représentants d’une lignée qui peut être suivie depuis le XVIème siècle. Ustad Chand Khan et Suraj Khan furent les fondateurs de leur gharana (école familiale caractéristique de leur style de jeu. Ils étaient tous musiciens à la cour du roi Akbar à Fateh pur Sikri (près de Delhi) en Inde. Cette école a formé de nombreux artistes interprètes de très haut niveau depuis les dernières 400 années. Elle est surtout reconnue pour les multiples formes musicales qu’elle enseigne : khyal, dhrupad, thumri, kafi et ghazal, et sa place particulière entre tradition et contemporanéité du chant. Le père de Sharafat Ali Khan, Salamat Ali Khan, disparu en 2001, hissa le style vocal du khyal à son plus haut niveau, tout comme celui du thumri et du tarana. Artiste de renommée internationale, professeur de musique classique vocale du nord de l’Inde et du Pakistan, Sharafat Ali Khan reprend donc aujourd’hui, à la suite de son père, le flambeau de cet art vocal unique. Une remarquable personnalité humaine et musicale, maître d’une expression faite de force et de raffinement.

He represents the 12th generation of this musical heritage, while his 15 year old son, Shujat Ali, is already carrying this heritage into the 13th. Both are virtuosos and worthy representatives of a lineage which can be traced back to the 16th century. Ustad Chand Khan and Suraj Khan were the founders of their gharana (family school characteristic of their musical style). They were all musicians at the court of the King Akbar at Fateh pur Sikri (near Delhi) in India. This school has trained many interpretive artists to a very high standard for the last 400 years. In particular, it is renowned for the many musical genres which it teaches: khyal, dhrupad, thumri, kafi and ghazal, and for its special place between the traditional and the contemporary in song. Sharafat Ali Khan’s father, Salamat Ali Khan, who passed away in 2001, took the vocal style of khyal to a higher level, as he did with the styles of the thumri and the tarana as well. An artist of international renown, a teacher of classical sung music in north India and Pakistan, Sharafat Ali Khan is following on from his father by taking up the torch of this unique vocal art. A remarkable person and musician, master of fine yet powerful style of expression.
